Deer Hunter: Interactive Hunting Experience brings the thrill of the hunt to the computer screen, offering three diverse locales and seasons. Spot big bucks in the relatively sparse woods of winter-bound Indiana, a leafy fall setting in the Arkansas woodlands, and the thick pines of the Colorado Alpine meadows. Hone skills at the target range with a .270 caliber rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun or a compound bow. Hunting techniques include spotting deer droppings, rubbings, and bedding areas, as well as factoring in wind direction, use a deer call or antler rattle, and more.
Virtual hunters can spot deer through binoculars or a rifle sight, or use a top-down map view that offers an easy method for selecting new locations. Other features include use of a tree stand, attractant scents or a cover scent to mask human odors, and a Trophy Room where prize bucks are showcased. For players needing additional help, three codes are available that depict deer locations, lure prey closer, and accelerate movement.
Ripping up the PC charts for months, Deer Hunter by Wizard Works has become the most popular hunting game of all time. You're probably saying to yourself: 'Was there ever any competition?' Well, not really. Originally designed as a Wal-Mart exclusive, Deer Hunter rapidly caught the eye of sport hunters and soon after, the entire gaming industry. It took the mighty StarCraft from Blizzard to knock this behemoth out of the number one spot. At one time, Deer Hunter and Deer Hunter: Extended Season held the top two spots. Not bad for a game whose production cost a fraction of the overhead of most popular games today.
Let's get things straight. Deer Hunter is not a 'game.' It's a hunting simulation. It simulates hunting. This is important, because real hunting is nothing like mowing down monsters in Quake.
Graphically, Deer Hunter does mother nature justice. The 360 degree head-cam portrays the winter scenes, forests, and meadows well. There aren't any breathtaking views, but no one buys this game to go sight-seeing. There is an overhead, square map that you actually move around on. Once you find a suitable spot, you can click on 'hunt' and the perspective changes to that of the hunter. This view only rotates 360 degrees. The animals look alright; no fancy 3D effects, but they look like deer.
Soundwise, Deer Hunter also captures the feel of hunting well. As you stand around waiting for deer, you hear the howling of the wind or the chirping of birds and gurgling of rivers. It's like one of those new-age, 'sounds of nature' tapes. Quite relaxing. You also hear your buck call and antler rattle, which I guess sound real. Finally, the hunter gives you great, constructive advice while standing around. Things like 'Nice shot. That's a good way to scare off all the bucks.', or 'I'm getting cold.'
The options in Deer Hunter are pretty much what you'd expect. There are the three aforementioned weapons and three optional hunting aids: a tree stand, cover scent, and deer attractant. Just picture yourself standing in the middle of the forest dressed as a tree with a bottle of deer cologne. While hunting you also have a compass, binoculars, buck call, and antler rattle. No heat seeking missiles or motion trackers.
Probably one of the most attractive points of Deer Hunter is the ease of the interface. Everything is mouse driven and the help menu gives you enough strategy to be a successful hunter. Computer users of all levels will be able to step right into the game without much hassle. Hunting was never this easy.
I had few (if any) problems with Deer Hunter. I did have a few wishes though. Instead of rotating the head-cam, I would rather have been able to walk around in the environment. This would make the simulation all the more real. It would also be more interesting and realistic to have other animals in the maps instead of only deer. Finally, after scoring a few kills, the thrill of it all kind of died. Killing a couple of deer was alright, but I won't be burning the midnight oil trying to bag the mythical Yeti-buck of the Andes. I'm sure hunting fans will get much more replay out of the game.
Deer Hunter is a must download for hunting fans. I don't hunt but I still found Deer Hunter to be a satisfying experience. It's an excellent hunting simulation and shows that you don't need big bucks to make a best seller.

Deer Hunter 2004 Review
- Review by Brandon
Deer Hunter 2004 is an extremely realistic hunting simulation game that is a good choice for players who love everything about hunting. You select where and when you want to hunt, as well as the weapons and gear you'll use. You can create your own hunter and improve your skills through bagging better deer. You can even take your skills online and compete against other players. This game has all the elements necessary to create an authentic and entertaining hunting experience.
Create a Hunter and Get Shootin
Before you can actually begin hunting in Deer Hunter 2004, you'll need to create a hunter. There are quite a few options available when it comes to customizing. You pick the name, select the look and clothing, and distribute points into various categories that improve your hunter abilities. You can change how well you fire weapons, hide your presence from the deer, track animals, and more.
Once you've got a hunter, you can select a location to hunt and the gear you want to use. You'll begin your hunt in that area and can kill and collect (bag) up to three deer. You can bag one doe (adult female deer) and two bucks (adult male deer). Once you've got all three, your hunt is over and you can begin a new hunt. You can hunt alone, or go online and play with others. However, since Deer Hunter 2004 is an older game and Deer Hunter 2005 has been released, there really isn't anyone online to play.
Pick Your Location and Season
There are a total of six different locations where you can hunt ranging from the Kentucky farmlands to the Oregon Valley. While these are large and diverse maps to play, it would have been nice to have a few more options to choose from. When picking a location, you can also select one of three seasons, which will change how effective calls and lures can be.
You can change the time of day and weather as well, all of which will affect the appearances and behavior of deer. For example, deer will often be found near water sources later in the day, or out in the open on sunny days. Not only can you hunt in these locations, but there's even an option to observe the deer in these locations with the Wildlife mode, which can give you valuable information for your hunts.
Difficulty Settings
Deer Hunter 2004 Full Game Download
There are three different difficulty levels offered in Deer Hunter 2004. These difficulties give you the ability to find a hunting experience that's right for you. One downside when it comes to difficulty and playing the game is just the amount of time you might need to hunt down and collect all these deer. You'll need a lot of patience to find the best deer or to camp out and lure them to you.
No Tutorial Makes the Learning Curve Steeper
The biggest problem for Deer Hunter 2004 is the total lack of any sort of tutorial or manual. When you first start the game, you're left to basically figure everything out on your own. This can be challenging, especially for people unfamiliar with hunting. While many items have simple descriptions that tell you what they do, they don't tell you how to properly use them. You might see that a certain scent attracts bucks, but no idea when or where to use it. A general hunting guide or tutorial of any kind would have been tremendously helpful.
Another related issue is illegal hunting actions. You are given no warning or information on these beforehand, but actions like shooting a swimming deer or killing too many in a single hunt will turn your hunt into an illegal one that will not reward points or trophies. It's a great realistic touch, but annoying when you aren't aware of it beforehand.

Controls Are Fairly Basic
Despite the lack of a tutorial, the controls themselves aren't all that complicated (especially for players familiar with first-person shooters). You move with the WASD keys, select weapons or gear with keys 1-10, look around with the mouse, and fire with the Left Mouse button. More advanced controls affect your speed or let you use vehicles. All of the controls are visible and can be changed in the game settings.
Strong Presentation
The presentation in Deer Hunter 2004 is one of the best parts of the game. The deer are detailed and realistic not only in their behavior, but in the way they look as well. The environments, while not as well done as the deer, are still authentic and detailed. The environments are quite large and filled with many kinds of plants and animals (not just deer).
The sounds play their part as well. The animal calls are realistic in their noises, and you can tell when you've messed up a call. You'll hear the sounds of bows and gunshots you fire. You can even hear the sounds of your own footsteps as you hunt. The whole presentation really improves the game and draws you into the action.
Conclusion - A Decent Hunting Game, Not as Good as 2005 Edition
Overall, Deer Hunter 2004 would be an good game for anyone who has a strong interest in hunting. However, Deer Hunter 2005 is available for you to play as well. Deer Hunter 2005 is very similar to Deer Hunter 2004, but with many improvements (like more gear to use) and different locations to hunt. While this is still a fun game, it is less desirable as a result. If you enjoy hunting you can still give this game a try and see if it's right for you, but a better game might be available.
