Rupa Manjari is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Tamil as well as Malayalam films. Her mother tongue is Tamil.[3] She made her debut in Nandhini's film Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru (2009), before playing the leading roles in Naan (2012) and Yaamirukka Bayamey (2014).[4]

Career[edit]

Rupa Manjari got a chance to meet Nandhini and auditioned for Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru and that the movie was well received. It took four months for her to be choosen from over 30 other girls who had also auditioned.[5] The film, a romantic comedy, pitted her opposite Ajmal and featured the pair looking for a lost baby. Rupa was nominated for the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress Award for her performable and a critic described her portrayal of Archana as that she 'brings her character vibrantly to life with all the nuances of anger, humour, tenderness and soft romance'.[6]

She was next seen in the 2010 Malayalam film Tournament directed and produced by Lal. She played a wildlife photographer who meets a bunch of men who have been selected for a cricket tournament.[7] The film opened to negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office.[8] She was seen in the long-delayed Vijay Antony starrer Naan having a song Nila Nila and was a part of video for the successful promotional song, 'Makkayala Makkayala', which was released online.[9][10][11] The film started production in early 2010 and released in 2012. It got positive reviews from critics. In 2012 she was also seen in two Malayalam films Mallu Singh and she did a small guest appearance in the Malayalam filmI Love Me.The first film in 2014 for her was the commercially successful comedy-thriller movie, Yaamirukka Bayamey.

She has one upcoming film in Tamil, Sivappu in which she plays a construction worker.[12]

Manjari (born 17 April 1986)[1] is an Indian playback singer and Hindustani vocalist.[2][3][4] Her first stage performance was with Shiva, the Kolkata - based rock band, when she was in class eight.[5]

Career[edit]

Manjari was introduced into the world of film music by Ilaiyaraaja in the Sathyan Anthikad movie, 'Achuvinte Amma'. She sang two songs in the movie, a duet 'Swasathin Thalam' with Dr. K.J. Yesudas and a solo 'Tamarakuruvikku' in the movie. Since her début, she has worked with the likes of Ramesh Narayan, Ilayaraaja, M. G. Radhakrishnan, Kaithapram Viswanathan, Vidyasagar, M. Jayachandran and the late Raveendran. She has also sung for albums such as Balabhaskar's Mazhayil Aaro Oral. She has over 200 Tamil and Malayalam films and several albums to her credit.Since 2004, Manjari has performed Hindustani Classical concerts in India and the world over under the prestigious banner of 'Soorya'. Manjari also gained popularity as a Ghazal singer. She performed an exclusive Ghazal show titled 'Khayal' in 'Media One TV' featuring popular Ghazals of yesteryears.[6]

Manjari won the Kerala State Film Award for the best female singer twice; first in 2004, for the song Mukilin makale in the film Makalku and second in 2008 for the song Mullulla Murikkinmel in Vilapangalkappuram.[7]Manjari is a popular playback singer and Live performer today. She has set up her own band for Ghazal Concerts and performs at various venues in India and abroad. Manjari continues to pursue her studies in Hindustani Classical Music under the tutelage of Pandit Ramesh Julé of Kirana Gharana.[6]

In 2016 she won the prestigious Sahir and Adeeb International Award for her contribution to Urdu and the genre of ghazals. Among the four recipients, she was the only Indian to receive the award in 2016. She is also the youngest Indian to receive the eminent award. In the past Adeeb International has awarded the Sahir and Adeeb awards to almost 60 eminent personalities and legends like Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Kaifi Azmi, B R Chopra, Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore, Begum Bushra Rehman amongst others.[8] Tamil Nadu state award

She was born to Babu Rajendran and Dr. Latha; she also has a younger sister named Madhuri. She is an alumnus of Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir in the Sultanate of Oman.

In 2014, Manjari released her first Hindi Single titled 'Aiy Aiy Yaa'[10] with Crescendo Music. The Lyrics of Alok Jha is composed by Santosh Nair. The video was shot in exotic locations of Dubai.

In 2015, Manjari released a Malayalam single titled 'Anuragam' which was composed and sung by the artist. She also featured in the video shot in Munnar under the direction of VK Prakash.

She has also sung title songs for several Malayalam television series like Swami Ayyapan, Krishnakripasagaram, and Sreekrishnaleela.

Manjari released her very first original Ghazal titled “Ab Etbaar Nahi” on 22 September 2020. This musical which is her own composition penned by Moid Rasheedi, won millions of hearts within the first day of release.
