Sonic 3D Blast, the first ever three-dimensional adventure has been converted over to the PC from the Saturn. In Sonic 3D Blast you must help Sonic rescue the flickies from Dr. Robotnik before the Chaos Emerald falls into the hands of someone capable and willing to use it to further his powers.
Sonic 3D Blast is a faithful emulation of the original Sega game. You will of course remember Sonic, the cool blue porcupine, who has to run around in a 3D world to collect rings, kill robots by jumping over their heads and, most important of all, gathering up the furry animals you meet during the game to free them. Sonic X-Treme The game was set to be a 'safety net' for the Saturn in case of Sonic X-Treme failing to pass the production stages. It did, and so Sonic 3D became the only platformer appearance of the blue hedgehog in Sega's 32-bit console. Version differences The bonus stages are. As the name suggests Sonic 3D Blast is rendered in 3D, viewed from an isometric tilted above view. Sound effects and the soundtrack are as expected jaunty, cute and extremely Japanese. Each level consists of a hunt to find and rescue five birds (flickies) through 3D levels of spikes, pits, tunnels, robots, turbo wheel boosts and turbo loops.
The one hundred ring bonus stages have also been converted over from the original Sonic's now in full 3D glory moving at an even more impressive pace. Sonic as usual can perform spin dashes, rolling, running and also interact with the 3D environments.

Here Comes Sonic
Sonic the Hedgehog is back in a whole new game format that promises to be a lot of fun. Fans of Sonic can expect great graphics, an engaging storyline and plenty of action from Sonic 3D Blast. Read on to discover if the game lives up to its claims.

The first thing that gamers will probably notice about Sonic 3D Blast is that the graphics are not actually 3D. Sure, they are colourful and fun and Sonic the Hedgehog is presented in all his gaming glory. However, considering the game actually has 3D in the title, the graphics may be a bit of a letdown.
The other curious thing about the game is that it really isn’t much of a blast. Unlike many other Sonic games on the market, Sonic 3D Blast does not actually feature much action at all. The main aspect of the game is collecting rings, which is fine in itself, but it feels as though parts of the game are missing.
The environments that Sonic and his friends explore look and feel very familiar. Although there are eight different zones to explore in total, these zones follow the typical game style and include the grassy slopes and lava strewn landscapes. There are plenty of touches of nostalgia such as the sound effects and the way that rings scatter as soon as Sonic is hit by an enemy. While these touches of nostalgia can be interesting at first, they do not offer players anything new or different to discover.
One of the main differences between Sonic 3D Blast and many of the other games in this series is actually a major flaw. Whereas the controls are usually very slick and easy to use, this time around they are rather slippery and make controlling the lovable hedgehog rather tricky and even frustrating at times.
The title of this game promises so much and the expectation of most gamers are sure to be high as they start to play. While fans of Sonic and his cute crew will still enjoy running through mazes and collecting rings, there are much better Sonic games out there which offer this feature as well as a number of other elements that help to make the games much more well rounded and entertaining.
Pros
- Colourful graphics
- Upbeat music
Cons
- Not really 3D
- The controls are rather disjointed
- The game gets very repetitive after a while
